Whakapapa pounamu
It’s all about whakapapa. As the whakatuaki tell us;
‘Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi – engari he toa takitini ke!’
‘My strength/being is not that of one person – but of thousands!’
This beautiful taonga is a nod to the importance of whakapapa. Each hole represents your tūpuna and the weaving together of who they were that resulted in who you are today.
When you know you’re whakapapa you can look in the mirror and know who it was that culminated in the person you see before you. Their exploits and adventures, their wisdom and knowledge, their achievements and mistakes. All of it is brought together there in you.
And knowing this gives you the strength to go forward and be the best human you can be. So that all those thousands of years of life that came before you are honoured and respected. That the strength and character they give to you can continue to go forward and be given to others.
Whakapapa is your identity. Whakapapa is also your duty. Go forward with the strength and knowledge of your whakapapa.
