Te Kōuma Tangiwai

Te Kōuma is a breastplate or chest piece. Your kōuma (chest) was always heavily guarded in battle, thus kōuma taonga were designed to protect the chest, the seat of life.

The strength of this kōuma offers mana, tiaki and whakapapa.

The size of this kōuma enhances the mana of the wearer, which in turn highlights the mana of the taonga.

The tiaki(guard) given to the wearer of this taonga is through the whakapapa notches carved into the taonga. Historically whakapapa notches recorded every generation and were used as a memory aid when reciting whakapapa.  Now people use them to represent various elements such as Individual whanau members they’d like acknowledged (siblings, parents, grandparents, mokopuna), or generational notches.

Being a Kōuma this taonga also protects(tiaki) and enhances the wairua around your heart.

With this taonga over your heart you will carry your whakapapa with you, stand strong, be proud of who you are and where you come from.

Flick through the photos and you can see how this taonga looks on and also how it lights up with the light behind.  It’s truly a wonder.

Inā kei te mohio koe ko wai koe, I anga mai koe I hea, kei te mohio koe, kei te anga atu ki hea.
If you know who you are and where you are from, then you will know where you are going.
