The Winds of Tāwhirimātea
This pendant is a storm in a pounamu. It is electric. It is alive. With shimmering silver chatoyancy, it will keep you mesmerized for hours as you watch the fibres shift and move. Just like the storms and winds of Tāwhirimātea.
The Winds of Tāwhirimātea would be the perfect gift for that special someone who stands up for what they believe in regardless of who opposes them. Just as Tāwhirimātea stood against all his brothers as they fought to separate his parents.
Tāwhirimātea brought forth an army of his children (winds, rain, mists and fog) to help him fight his brothers. This taonga embodies his attributes and his army of children. It would also be a wonderful gift for someone needing extra strength in difficult times.
The Winds of Tāwhirimātea is a beautiful shape, perfect for holding on to and for rolling in your hands when you want to enjoy the show. We absolutely love this taonga!

The Story
Tāwhirimātea is the god of weather, including thunder, lightning, winds, clouds and storms. He is a son of Papatūānuku and Ranginui. Tāwhirimātea is the second oldest of 7 children, all of whom are boys. Tāwhirimātea is the only son who opposed the brothers plans to separate their parents so that they might have light. Ultimately he was overrun by his brothers who succeeded in forcing Papatūānuku(earth) and Ranginui(sky) apart.
