Pīngao Toki – pounamu toki for rangatahi

This is a handsome toki with strong lines and curves. This size and shape would be good for a young person or older.  Perhaps a graduation gift or for their 13th birthday.  Set them on their path with a pounamu toki to keep them grounded and connected to their whenua and whanau.

Pīngao is a golden coloured sand sedge.  It was used for weaving and tukutuku panels because of its beautiful golden colour.  Have a look through the photos and compare the toki with the Pīngao at the end,  I think you’ll see why we named this toki Pīngao.

Flower Jade comes from the Marsden Valley in Te Tai Poutini. It is all commonly known as Marsden Flower Jade.  Distinct to Aotearoa it is one of the rarest Nephrites (NZ Jades) and is therefore highly sought after.

The flower in its name refers to the golden patterns throughout the stone.  These patterns are caused by minerals seeping into the fractures while the kohatu is being rolled, under pressure, under a glacier. Eventually it all comes together like a beautiful golden mineral cake,  The flower jade is then deposited at the terminal and lateral moraines of the glacier (the sides and end).

Toki had to be strong to endure the cutting and scraping motions of its use.  Therefore it has come to be a symbol of strength(particularity in times of adversity), courage, and fortitude. Toki were also worn by elders as a symbol of power, wisdom, and authority.
