There are a number of native ferns that fall under the name of Hen or Chicken Fern, and in reo Māori as Mauku/Mouku, in the Aspleniaceae family.  Most of these ferns are found throughout Aotearoa and were used by Māori as a vegetable and a herb, as well as for clothing and housing.  Fronds were wrapped around tuna (eel), kererū and kūmara to add flavour. It is said to taste similar to asparagus. The fronds were woven into shoulder cloaks, footwear and sleeping mats. Aspleniaceae ferns were also used in rituals to Tāne when forest trees were felled for use. So you can see, ferns were a crucial part of life for Māori. Hence these earrings are a nod to this versatile and essential fern family.

These earrings twist and move as you do, making you feel gorgeous. And they are a fabulous talking point – people are always commenting on and complimenting me on mine!   Let your individuality shine through with these one of a kind silver fern earrings.
