Karengo – large round pounamu earrings

Karengo is seaweed red/green sea lettuce that was picked and dried to be eaten over winter months.  This pounamu has the colouring and pattern of karengo, and a special korero around how it is harvested.  You see, this pounamu is found in the cliff faces at the seas edge and could only be harvested at low tide when the cliffs were accessible.  Harvesting this way is no longer allowed, however we were very honoured to be given a small piece of this Karengo pounamu from an old collection.  While we have kept a little for ourselves 😏, we wanted to share some with you all because it is just so incredibly beautiful – we couldn’t keep it to ourselves!
