Matā – obsidian ring

Ohhhh, the elegant, sleek, blacker than black, timeless Matā (Obsidian).  Isn’t it just so beautiful? I wanted to set it in a ring that really set of the Matā elegance.  And so I created this little tea-cup setting – to ‘elevate’ its beauty.😏

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. When cut it holds an edge just like window glass – tricky to carve!  But great for cutting and scraping wood, flax and food. Obsidian flakes from pre-european Māori sites have been found throughout Aotearoa, particularly in the North Island. We were gifted a small amount of obsidian from another carver who finds it in his rohe.   We will be doing a very limited number of rings with this taonga so if you like what you see, don’t hesitate.

  • Matā from Matatā and 925 Sterling Silver
  • Size: U.5
  • Ring surface 9mm diameter

💚Now every taonga you purchase helps us to carve a taonga for EVERY tamariki in care in Aotearoa. You can read more about our Tū Māia project here. Ngā mihi mahana for your support of this kaupapa!💚
