Toki Māota – Raw Tangiwai Pounamu Toki

Māota is to be raw, newly grown, green – everything this toki is.

Tim had this piece sitting on his bench for so long, just waiting to see what should be done with it.  And then he realised what should be done with it, very little. It has strength, it has character, it feels amazing in your hands.

The three little notches on the side are whakapapa notches.  Historically they were used for memory in the recitation of whakapapa.  Here they are a reminder of all who came before you, yourself, and all who will come after.

The whakapapa notches combined with its raw skin make this the perfect taonga for someone who likes to fiddle or fidget with their jewellery. Equally, it has an incredible earthy touch which leaves one feeling very grounded.

And Tims final little touch is the paua ‘eye’ right at the top. Make of it what you will!  It fits so nicely with the deep dark green of the Tangiwai pounamu.

Toki are a symbol of strength(particularity in times of adversity), courage, and fortitude. Toki were also worn by elders as a symbol of power, wisdom, and authority.
