The versatile and hard-working Akeake (Dodonaea viscosa), meaning ‘ forever forever’. Akeake is an exceptionally hard wood much favoured by Maori for making taiaha, patu and other weapons. It was also used to make garden implements, walking sticks, stern pieces on waka, beams in housing and more. Medicinally it was useful for treating burns, treat toothache and reduce fever. The leaves were also used for scent. Tough, durable and the heaviest of woods in Aotearoa, its no surprise it is called ‘forever forever’!
