Māori used waterways to traverse both Aotearoa and the world. Accordingly the waka, and everything associated with this water vehicle for travel, is sacred to Māori. Bailers were elaborately carved from wood and given names. Māori bailers had a unique forward projecting handle to prevent undue strain in the wrist.
